How to Get a Marriage License from Chapel Hill
The Orange County Register of Deeds is at the Gateway Center Building, 228 S. Churton Street, Suite 300 (3rd Floor), Hillsborough, NC 27278. The mailing address is P.O. Box 8181, Hillsborough, NC 27278. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Marriage license hours run from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Appointments are available from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM and are recommended. Call (919) 245-2700 or (919) 245-2701 for the vital records line.
Under G.S. 51-6, you need a license before the ceremony. Bring a valid ID such as a driver's license, state ID, or passport. Each applicant needs their Social Security number. If you do not have a Social Security number, a sworn affidavit is available at the office. If divorced within 30 days, bring a copy of the decree. A Worksheet for Preparation of Marriage License can be completed online or at the office. The fee is $60, payable by cash, debit or credit card, money order, or certified bank check.
Chapel Hill Marriage License Requirements
G.S. 51-2 sets the minimum age at 18. No residency is needed. No medical exam or blood test is required. G.S. 51-8 makes the Register of Deeds the issuing official. Both parties should be present, though exceptions exist for hardship cases such as incarceration, hospitalization, or military service. Two witnesses attend the ceremony. The officiant returns the signed license to Orange County within 10 days.

Marriage License Fees in Chapel Hill
The license costs $60. Certified copies of the marriage certificate cost $10 each from Orange County. The NC Vital Records office has copies for $24 per search. The county office is faster for recent Chapel Hill marriages.
Civil ceremonies are available through the Orange County Magistrate in Hillsborough at (919) 644-4690 or through the Chapel Hill Magistrate at (919) 929-5707. Office hours are 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The magistrate fee is $20.

Once the signed license is on file, you can request certified copies of the marriage certificate. Each copy costs $10 from the county office.
