Avery County manages marriage license records through the Register of Deeds office in Newland, North Carolina. Erin G. English serves as the Register of Deeds. Avery County Marriage License by Appointment
Marriage licenses in Avery County are issued by appointment only. Call the Register of Deeds at (828) 733-8260 to schedule a time. Appointments are available Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Both applicants must appear at the courthouse. Only the applicants are allowed inside the building for the appointment.
Before your visit, download and fill out the marriage license application from the Avery County Register of Deeds website. This saves time at the office. Bring a valid photo ID and your Social Security number. The fee is $60, which matches the standard fee across all North Carolina counties. N.C.G.S. § 51-8 requires the Register of Deeds to issue the license once all legal conditions are met.
The license is valid for 60 days. It can be used for a ceremony in any county in the state. After the wedding, the officiant must return the signed license to the Avery County office within 10 days, as N.C.G.S. § 51-6 requires. Two witnesses must sign the license during the ceremony.
